The Basket Case Boutique
Role: Creative Director
Challenge: The client needed to expand an outdated 1,000 sq. ft. gable building with an additional 1,000 sq. ft., transforming it into a modern boutique space. The goal was to create a building that engaged the main street, provided shade and comfort for customers during Florida’s hot summers, and introduced outdoor communal areas—all while improving site flow and usability.
Solution: I aligned the new structure on a central axis, splitting the building with a natural breezeway to encourage passive cooling. A wraparound canopy with brise soleil elements was designed based on sun studies to maximize shade. I also redefined the site plan, adding 8 new parking spaces and integrating landscaping features to soften the modern lines of the expansion, creating a balanced connection between interior and exterior experience.
Impact: The redesign transformed the boutique into a modern, street-engaging destination that offers shade, comfort, and improved accessibility. The addition doubled the building’s usable space, improved customer experience with outdoor gathering areas, and enhanced curb appeal—strengthening the boutique’s presence on the main street while supporting its expansion into new services.
